Snorkel Trip to Wild Cat Island, Coniston Water – 8/9 June 2013

Our first trip of 2013 in early June was focused in the Lake District as we were originally intending to dive at Birks Bridge. However, following further study of some of the wild swimming publications we decided on planning a dive to Peel Island in Coniston water (aka Wild cat island from Swallows and Amazons). We used a 3m inflatable to row across to the island and to take picnic and snorkel diving equipment for a day long adventure. Water depths were ideal at 3m and the water temperature higher than that found in the rivers at this time of year.

We were able to snorkel back to the main land and on the far side of the island we found a drop off to the murkier 55m depths below.

Following this we stayed at Fisherground, a family friendly campsite in Eskadale and dived at Ulpha bridge on the Sunday, again recommended in a wild swimming publication, before travelling home.
