Menai Boat Run

ECSAC organise the annual Menai Run.  This is an early season opportunity to get the boats out on the water and give them a good run before the season starts.  We also draw together over 20 clubs from across the North-West and beyond for a fun day out that also raises money for the RNLI.  In 2017 we raised over £1,000 for the Beaumaris Lifeboat as a direct result of the trip.  You can see all those who took part in last year’s Menai Run in the photo below presenting the cheque to Philip Greville the Station Manager for the Beaumaris Lifeboat.

Boat Run 2018 – March 25th – TRIP NOW FULL

To put your name on the reserve list please send an email to [email protected] we will then advise how to confirm your booking if any more places come available.

We are again aiming to raise over £1,000 for the RNLI and to foster a team spirit between the boats and clubs that attend.  To that end we will be issuing a pack to each boat on the trip, this will be a large BSAC flag with the club’s name on it (to better aid identification of the clubs taking part), as well as a press pack (more on that below), navigation information and points of interest on the straits as well as a risk assessment and safety advice.

The Menai Run may seem a while away but planning has been well underway already and following it being announced at the BSAC Conference interest has been HUGE..    The trip is already fully subscribed with 38 boats from over 20 different clubs already signed up..  Of the clubs nearly half of them are new to the Menai Run this time!

If you add up all the miles that the clubs will travel towing their boats (both outward and return journeys) over the weekend the clubs will cover more than 9,000 miles with their boats –  yes that is NINE THOUSAND MILES!  :0

We have so many people coming from such a distance that we have decided to extend the Menai Run into a whole weekend (for those that want to make the most of the travel time).  So we have decided to have an open invitation dive day on the Saturday and a large BBQ on Saturday night.  With some accommodation made available at the Dinas Bunkhouse, Yurts and Camping Ground.   You are of course welcome to make more comfortable arrangements in the area if you wish!    Places at the Bunkhouse and Yurts will be on a first come first served basis and you MUST book both Friday and Saturday nights due to the restrictions placed on us by the owner.   Booking places will be done via me – at a cost of about £15 per night TBC.

We will launch both club boats on the Saturday and subject to weather / viz etc we plan some diving either on some walls in the Straits, some known reefs or around Puffin Island (some of my favorite diving around Anglesey).  If the weather or viz precudes diving we will do some boat based sightseeing going to look at the seal colony on Puffin Island and interesting points around the coast with a stop off at a seafront pub.

Saturday night we will have an open invitation BBQ at the Dinas Bunkhouse/Yurts, (for everyone irrespective of whether they are staying there) they have a purpose built gazebo and BBQ area along with a large wine/beer cooler so it will be a chance to meet up with other clubs and have a good night.

BBQ places will be available to anyone – subject to a suitable small entry charge to cover food.  It will be a bring your own beer affair!

On the Sunday we will do the Menai Run as per previous years, launching the boats that come for the day from Dinas and we will again donate a large cheque to the RNLI and aim to have a group photo outside the Beaumaris Lifeboat Station, if the lifeboat crew are not called out we hope they and the boat will get in the picture this time.  We will have photographs taken on the day as well as aerial footage that will be used to generate some positive press for BSAC and the clubs.  These materials will be provided as a press pack after the event along with some advice on how to make the most of the PR materials to promote your clubs locally and hopefully generate some good press and potential membership leads in your local areas.

Club Registration will require an initial deposit of £10 to secure the place along with a final payment of £40 (so a total of £50 per boat) the £40 final payment will be payable early in 2018. For this you will receive the flag, press pack and crew pack with navigation and points of interest, it also covers the launch fees which will be paid centrally by the organisers to the Dinas Boat Yard, we will also arrange pre-orders of food at the Chip Shop in Beaumaris.
