Dive plans 2017!

I have now looked at the tides for 2017 and produced an outline calendar for the decent weekends to dive in 2017.  The Neap tide weekends will be the best ones for RIB diving trips so I would encourage everyone to look at their diaries and set aside weekends for diving.  I would like trip organisers to book slots on the calendar and also book the boats as soon as they are able to confirm their own availability.  We will also have a planning meeting early in the new year to look at options.   If you have any preferences for types of trips, venues or dive sites then please let me know and we will make sure we plan around people’s preferences.

Vote for us again!

We have entered the Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund for a small donation of £300..   Why not vote for us. It will help fund the baby changer in our disabled toilet.

Security concerns at the clubhouse.

Following the Undersea Ball we have identified an issue with the kids that hang around the clubhouse.  Up until recently this has been confined to drug use and general untidiness underneath the flyover. However, we have now had two incidents of people walking into the clubhouse when the front door is open and an instance of someone trying to steal equipment from the foyer.   For this reason we have now implemented an audible alarm when someone walks through the front door.   We would also ask everyone to remain vigilant and ensure that doors are shut and anyone entering the club who you don’t know is challenged.

Project Delta – re-engine project

delta The club committee met last week and discussed the progress towards our target for project delta.  I am delighted to announce that we have now agreed to initiate the re-engine project for the Delta over the winter.

The plan at this stage is to put a brand new 130hp Yamaha engine on the Delta and we anticipate it will be fitted during January – in readiness for use on the 2017 Menai boat run.  More on the boat run below.

This should make the Delta much more economical, more reliable and also easier to drive having removed the heavy twin two-stroke engines.  The fundraising we have done through 2016 has enabled this to happen to thanks to all our members who have contributed to this through the year.   We do have other projects going forward so I would encourage people to continue their support and in particular purchase raffle tickets for the annual dinner dance when they are available on Thursday – see below for the prizes and details of the raffle.

Dinner Dance Tickets will also be on sale shortly (same price as last year = £35) so please ensure you get yours asap as they are sure to sell out.

Menai Boat Run 2017 – 2nd April

menaiPlans are now progressing for the Menai Boat Run in 2017.  We have settled on the date of Sunday 2nd April.

If past years are anything to go by this should be a superb day out and will raise a significant amount of money for the RNLI.  We hope to get 2-3 boats from ECSAC along – including our Delta with its new engine.

Costs of the day will be modest, to cover the costs of towing and fuel and also a £5 per head donation to the RNLI.  We will aim to hold a presentation at the Beaumaris Lifeboat of the money raised and photo opportunity which we hope will get into the local press. There is huge interest in this event and we are aiming for over 20 boats to be out on the water.

If you have not done this day out before then you are missing out…

Take a look at the video from last year:

An interest list will go up on the board this week (£5 payment to secure your place – which will go to the RNLI).

Diving for All Course

Five of our club instructors attended the Diving for All course at the clubhouse and then at Poynton pool over the weekend. This course enabled our instructors to deliver dive training for people with disabilities so we intend to offer this capability to Help for Heroes and The British Legion and other local groups going forward.

For more details of the course see : http://www.bsac.com/page.asp?section=4677&sectionTitle=Diving+for+All+Course

Nitrox Blender Course

I ran the Nitrox Blender SDC at the club yesterday for Potteries BSAC (and some of our members) who came along and learned how to do partial pressure blending using our O2 bank.  We charged for the use of the club and the facilities and helped another club to improve their skills.  Everyone wins. We also have new people who are now able to do Nitrox Fills which makes life easier.    If you need either a Nitrox fill or a TriMix fill these can be done within the club – ideally you should let people know that you need a fill of this type before you arrive at the club – for Nitrox Fills please let Steve Welton know you need one – for TriMix fills please let me know.

AED Training at the Clubhouse – 1st December

aedPlease come along to the club on 1st December.  We plan to run a short demo/training session on how to use the AED (Defibrillator).  This will be a demonstration of how it works and what it does and will enable anyone to use the AED in the clubhouse (or on a club trip) should the need arise.  It is well worth attending.

aed2The greatest benefit to having a defibrillator is that they DO save lives. Having a defibrillator at hand may increase the chance of survival from around 10% with only good effective CPR, up to possibly 60-80% with a defibrillator at hand for immediate use.  So make sure you know how to use it – you may save a life!

Kitchen Project in progress

kitchenAs you will see at the club the Kitchen project continues to progress well, the floors have been screeded, electrics stripped and walls chased out and the electrical first fix has been completed.

The next stages will be completion of the electrics, filling the old extractor hole and re-drilling a new hole for the repositioned extractor.  Once that is done it will be the plastering the walls and then floor tiling before we set about fitting the kitchen.  Things should start to look very different shortly.  In the meantime we will shortly be creating a temporary bar in the main club area as the existing bar area will be out of bounds while the floor is tiled.  Please bear with us during this time – bottled beers and cans as well as soft drinks will be available but we will need to use plastic glasses.

Dinner Dance Tickets.

Dinner Dance Tickets are now on full sale.  The price has been fixed at £35.   It is a not to miss event.  I will be aiming to sell this event out – please let me know asap if you want tickets.   I will have the tickets at the club on a Thursday so please bring along cash or a cheque and I will issue the tickets.

 Dinner Dance Raffle Tickets.

We take delivery of the raffle tickets this week.  These will be on sale each week in the club and also available for purchase remotely if you can’t make it.  Please email me if you want to order some tickets. Tickets are £1 each and £5 for a book.  We would like to encourage all members to buy a few tickets and also to sell some to friends, family and colleagues.

First prize will be a superb Smart Watch – a FitBit Charge 2 – that will track steps, exercise and integrate to your phone and alert to texts and calls. https://www.fitbit.com/uk/charge2

Mike Bushell is coming to the pool THIS Thursday.

BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell will be in the pool (along with a camera crew) doing a try-dive this week.  He plans to do a piece on Scuba Diving and will be using ECSAC as the host club..  If you want to be in the pool for this then please let Jon Green know. He will coordinate things so we don’t have too many people in.  It would be good to have a few of us in so we look busy though!   We are not yet sure whether he is coming back to the clubhouse after the pool.  So being at the pool is your chance to get on the telly!
