Farne Islands - 1st - 2nd July 2023

Everyone arrived at the Joiners Shop Bunkhouse at various times on Friday night. This was good value for money and just 15 minutes from Seahouses.

On Saturday, we arrived at the harbour in Seahouses in good time with all kit ready to go for ropes off at 9.30am, a very civilised start to the day’s diving.

A slightly choppy ride out to the Farnes told us we were going to be tucked into a cliff out of the wind.

Ron put us in on a wall that was teeming with life. Sea urchins, Dead Men’s Fingers, Dahlia Anemones, Common Lobster, Sand brittlestars, Common Sunstars, Light Bulb Sea Squirts, various nudibranchs, Leopard-spotted gobies, octopus and Ballan Wrasse were amongst the species seen. We got out of the swell around 20m.

The second dive was similar with a wall and a large cave crevice. The delight of the day was a close encounter with a seal who was content to let some of us lie in front of her virtually nose to nose. She only bothered to roll on her side to watch us wave goodbye.

A superb BBQ set us all up for a wreck dive on Sunday. The skipper, Ron, put a shot on the hull plates which led us to two large boilers. Each tube was filled with life. Following the prop shaft led to the largest Lions Mane jelly fish of the weekend. Several were reported as were numerous smaller ones. Some lucky divers got a very curious Ballan wrasse who escorted them throughout the first dive.

Sunday’s second dive was in the same sheltered spot, also occupied by sight seeing tours and another dive rhib.

Megan and Clemmie provided some superb photographs of all the activity. Thank you both for a great record of the weekend, and to Ken for his BBQ skills.
