We have an award winning Snorkelling group within our branch who share the pool with the divers and are an active part of the club.  We welcome members from as young as six and can teach all of BSAC’s Snorkel grades from Dolphin Snorkeller up to Advanced Snorkeller.

We meet at Macclesfield Leisure Centre on Thursday evenings and run courses for individuals and families as well as Scouts and other groups, on a course by course basis. Please contact us to arrange your place on the next available course.  The pool session runs from 7.45pm to 8.45pm. Please allow 15 minutes before your session is due to start.

Email Jo Watson our Snorkel Leader for more information.

Courses Available

The club training is based on progressing through a series of BSAC courses.  We have a number of dedicated Snorkel Instructors to take participants through from start to finish.

Theory lectures are given to complement practical sessions in the pool (much of this is similar to topics covered in Science at school). Advancement occurs at your own pace, through several grades:

  • Experience Snorkelling (a “Try Snorkelling” session in the pool)
  • Dolphin Snorkeller (progressive, fun sessions appropriate for children, in the pool)
  • Snorkel Diver  (theory sessions & assessment and sheltered water lessons)
  • Advanced Snorkeller Diver (develops and extends practical skills & theory knowledge & use of additional equipment)
  • Snorkel Dive Manager

Basic training is also given in first-aid, rescue and resuscitation techniques as part of the Snorkel lifesaver award.

There are also opportunities to train as Instructors and Assistant Instructors.  We run Assistant Instructor courses within the branch and facilitate attendance at regional instructor courses.

The club will provide you with basic equipment (mask, snorkel, fins) for your first few sessions. Once you have settled in, you will be expected to obtain your own equipment. Before purchasing any equipment, it is recommended that you talk to any of the instructors for advice. You will also learn the basics of equipment choice and maintenance early in your training

During the summer months, the club organises day trips so that open water skills can be taught and tested.

This year we are going to Norfolk to explore the chalk reef and snorkel trail at Sheringham
