Anglesey- 6th - 8th September 2024

Phil prepped Cheshire Cat mid-week and Tim pumped the tubes on Thursday evening. We picked up the boat on Friday evening to tow it to Anglesey. The journey took more time than usual as there had been a fire in the first of the Conwy Tunnels and the A55 was closed. The diversion took us through Conwy. It was great fun towing Cheshire Cat through narrow streets and the arch.

The aim of the weekend was to give Will and Anna sea experience and for Helen to complete more sections of her Dive Leader qualification, with Tim as her instructor.

We met at Treaddur Bay on both days to load and launch Cheshire Cat. On Saturday the sun shone and the sea was relatively flat. Sunday was the opposite with rain, a chilly north westerly wind and the beginning of white horses on the waves. The sea temperature was a pleasant 15C and the viz around 2m due to a fine silt in the water.

Dive Sites

Saturday: AM: Raven’s Point and Gully. Depth 5-18m. PM: Cannon Site. Depth 5-17m.

Sunday: AM. Missouri forward section. PM: Missouri stern section. Depth 14m.

The kelp line was around 7m, and most rocky surfaces above 10m were covered in short red seaweed.

We spotted a variety of marine life. Boring, Elephant Hide, Crater, and Carrot Sponge, several Sea Orange, Dahlia and Snakelocks anemones, Double Spiral Worms, Common and Squat Lobster, Spider, Edible and Velvet Swimming Crab, Common Prawns, Polycera and Thorny Doris nudibranch, Potato Crisp Bryzoan, Bloody Henry  and Common Sunstars, Ascidia and Star Sea Squirts, Catshark, Pollack, shoals of juvenile Bib , Ballan and female Cuckoo Wrasse, Gold Sinny, Tompot Blennies, Leopard Spotted and Painted Gobies, Scorpion Fish and Dragonets.

Best find: Crawfish. (Will and Phil), Tompot Blennies hiding in the boilers.

A very successful and productive weekend. Thanks to Phil for planning and managing the diving. Thanks to buddies Anna, Will, Tim and Helen.
