Anglesey 11th July 2026
Boat prep was carried out Thursday night. Steve and Helen towed Top Cat to Anglesey on Friday afternoon, staying at The Anchorage Hotel at Four Mile Bridge. Nikki joined us later in the evening. The hotel’s new owners were happy with us parking the boat and have plans to add a drying room and encourage outdoor enthusiasts in the future.
At 8am on Saturday we met Jan and Jon at Trearddur Bay to load and launch Top Cat. With 5 divers and an ambitious timeline for the day, we took the spare cylinders onboard to save time later. An easy launch from the slipway and then departure just after 9, we set off to our first dive site The Chasms. The aim was a non-tidal, easy dive, as our main focus for the day was the afternoon low water slack window. We were treated to 6m vis, saw Spider Crab, Snakelocks anemone, Velvet Swimming Crab and lots of juvenile fish. Boring sponges, Bloody Henry starfish and fan worms were also spotted. The best find was Steve’s with a large Crawfish.
We then headed into Rhoscolyn for a comfort break before setting off on the long run down to The Segontium. On arrival there were two fishermen, but they moved off to allow us to dive. We shotted the wreck then tried to reposition it as we weren’t sure it was fully on it, that proved impossible, so it was clearly snagged in the wreck as The Segontium lies on a sandy seabed at around 30 metres.
Jon and Jan went in first, the shot had ended up fully inside the wreck! They managed to reposition it to recover later and completed a lovely dive. The three of Nikki, Steve and Helen then went in, and we had a great dive with 4-5m visibility. The wreck is covered in life; Plumose anemones were on every surface. We saw massive Common Lobsters, Edible Crab, Velvet Swimming Crab, Spider Crab and a large Conger eel popping out of its hole on the deck. Shoals of Bib and Pollock were also present. After exploring the wreck and avoiding lots of fishing line, we ascended back up the shot, and it was successfully recovered.
